Friends of Hawthorne
Park
is a non-profit volunteer organization
dedicated to preserving and maintaining Hawthorne Park. We take care of
planting, weeding, and other gardening tasks and host "love your
park" clean-up days several times a year. In addition to preservation
and beautification, we also produce free events for the community. Over
the past few years we have presented live jazz concerts, movie nights,
Shakespeare performances, yoga, and arts fairs. These events are funded
by grants along with community and local business donations. We welcome
participation by anyone in the community. If you want to get involved,

Podgurski
has been deeply embedded in the NY/Philly jazz scene for 20 years, enrolling
in New York’s New School in 1994, and living in Brooklyn until 2001
before returning to his native Philadelphia area. Over the years, he’s
performed at many of the region’s finest venues, most recently The
Kennedy Center, The Philadelphia Art Museum, The Jazz Gallery, The
Iridium and Bohemian Caverns.

Filmed at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island and directed by world-renowned photographer Bert Stern, Jazz on a Summer’s Day features intimate performances by an all-star line-up of musical legends including Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Anita O’Day, Chuck Berry, Dinah Washington, and closes with a beautiful rendition of The Lord’s Prayer by Mahalia Jackson at midnight to usher in Sunday morning. The film has been beautifully and extensively restored in 4K from the best surviving vault elements by IndieCollect.
